Is Sanctification By Law Or By Faith? — 6 Comments

  1. Today I found this quote of John Bengel in Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown’s commentary on Galatians 3:3:

“No doubt the Galatians thought that they were going more deeply into the Spirit; for the flesh may be easily mistaken for the Spirit, even by those who have made progress, unless they continue to maintain a pure faith.”

  2. The Christian life is based on the finished work of Christ on the cross. And the very thing upon which our life is built on the finished work of Christ is faith. Meaning that anything marvelous that will be taken place into our lives will be done in accordance with our faith in God through Christ. This leads us to easily conclude that sanctification is by faith.

  3. Another quote:

“Trying to do the Lord’s work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.” (Corrie ten Boom)

  4. You are the only person I can find writing about this. It does seem to be talking about sanctification. However, if sanctification has nothing to do with our justification, then why does Paul say, “You have been severed from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by the law.”? It is very confusing to me. Whatever is going on they have fallen from grace and if not being sanctified by the Spirit as opposed to the flesh can cause us to fall from grace, I’m not sure anyone I know is going to heaven. What do you make of all of this?

    • The way I see it, Paul is writing to the church in Galatia, not to individuals. The “you” in 5:4 is plural. If the church teaches that Christians must live legalistically after being saved, it is no longer a church that teaches grace through faith. It used to teach salvation and sanctification by grace and now it has literally “fallen out of grace.”

  5. Thank you for this. ‘Cast out the bond woman and her son’ in gal 4. He is speaking of/to born again christians. The bond woman being the Law and her son being the works of it (Not so much the judiazers and their teaching). Where do we cast it out from? Our conscience. The place that is trained from birth and says ‘good boy’ or ‘bad boy’ when we do something. Nothing but the blood of Jesus should reside there. If the Law resides in our conscience then it will serve to either accuse or excuse our behaviour. John Bunyan back in the 1200’s was a big advocate of this. ‘Of the Law and the christian’ is a good short read describing the relationship of our conscience and the Law. https://philsergi.com/of-the-law-and-a-christian-by-john-bunyan
John Reisinger, a friend of my grandpa wrote ‘study in galatians’. Really good read. He’s a proponent of New Covenant theology (which is really just what the Bible says), and deals largely with how we are sanctified after we are saved.
    Keep going brother!
