Beatty and vicinity:
View of Beatty Mountain, Beatty, Nevada, with the traditional tumbleweed in the foreground. (Yup, 95% of Beatty is mobile homes!) |
Some wild burros in the desert north of Beatty, Nevada. |
Death Valley National Park:
In the narrows about a mile from the end of Titus Canyon. This one-way road starts 5 miles west of Beatty and travels over 30 miles, past the ghost town of Leadville, before it exits the canyon in Death Valley. High-clearance vehicles are recommended but the road is passable for most cars most of the year. Considered by many as the best scenic drive in the park. |
View from the top of the Keane Wonder Mine tram. Telescope Peak is in the distance on the upper left of the view. |
View of Badwater from the top of Telescope Peak, over 2 miles higher. Dante's View, 20 miles away and over one mile above the valley floor, is located on the mountain range forming the other side of the valley. The base of Mount Charleston, just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, is visible in the upper portion of the picture. |
View from Dante's View showing Telescope Peak and Badwater, the lowest point in the western hemisphere. At the bottom right, there is a short whitish trail leading onto the saltflats. To the left of it is the 2-lane Badwater road which appears as a faint dark curve. Large image: 1024x768 (327kb) |

This is the inside of an old house in the Inyo ghost mining camp, Echo Canyon. |
This is the downstream end of Gower Gulch in the Golden Canyon area of Death Valley. It's a nice 5.5 mile hike from the parking lot, through this canyon to Zabriskie Point, and then back to the parking lot through Golden Canyon itself. |
Another picture from Gower Gulch. |
A picture of Golden Canyon roughly halfway between Zabriskie Point and the end of Golden Canyon. (1024x768) |
This is the view when you hike all the way to the end of Red Cathedral. All you see is the canyon walls until you get to this point, then it opens up. (1024x768) |
This natural bridge is in a canyon just north of Badwater. |
A 1.25 mile hike from a desolate parking area leads to a waterfall in a lush green canyon. The best time to visit Darwin Falls is April to early May after a wet spring. (512x643) |
Southern High Sierras (Lone Pine area):

Lone Pine Lake at Whitney Portal, Lone Pine, California. First lake on the southern end of the John Muir trail. This was taken with a cheap single-use camera. |

Part of Chicken Springs Lake on the Pacific Crest Trail, northwest of Horseshoe Meadows, west of Lone Pine, California. |
